FEED 500: NEW YORK CITY URBAN PROJECT
by Lauren Chan

The first service project our key club completed since the start of my term as the president of John Dewey High School was Feed 500, which is under an organization called New York City Urban Project. On April 16, we as a club headed to Kimmel center (research center under New York University.) Upon arrival, we signed in immediately and started packing all sorts of food into brown bags. After an hour of work, all the volunteers were separated into groups and headed out into the city with food to find people in need of them.

The wind was severely strong when we exit out of the subway station near Columbus Circle; we walked toward 5th Avenue in search of homeless people and one was easily spotted by Diana, a volunteer who is currently studying at NYU. We first offered him food, and then we talked with him for a while. Knowing the fact that not many people out there offer money or assistance to them, not even bother to stop and chat with them. By the end of the day, I’ve learned that I did one of the most productive service projects of the year. Therefore, the purpose of this service project was to give them warmth and hope even under extreme harsh weather.
