New York District Key Clubbers

This year is promised to be a great one in the realm of District Projects! My name is Rhea Singh, and I serve as chair on the District Projects Committee for the 2010-2011 service year! Your District Projects Committee is made up of five dedicated Lieutenant Governors and we are here to serve you in regard to the charities. We will be supplying you with frequent updates and ideas to make sure that this year, when fundraising, you maximize your success.

What are the District Projects, you ask? The 10 District Projects are a group of charities recognized by the New York District Board for their importance. While there are many charities that you can donate to, it is suggested that you aid the New York District by donating funds to these charities. Certainly, they were voted on by your District Board, so you can count on them to be extraordinary!

The ten district projects for the 2010-2011 service years are as follows:

1.  Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center
The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center at North Shore University Hospital Foundation sponsors a variety of events during the year designed to raise funds and/or to support efforts to reduce pediatric injuries or support pediatric treatment. For more information, visit
http://www.kiwanis-ny.org/kptc.htm.

2.  Kamp Kiwanis

Kamp Kiwanis is a camp owned and operated by the New York District Foundation. The camp gives a great experience for youth, adults and those withdisabilities. Check out http://www.kiwanis-ny.org/kamp/

3.  Local Cause
Local causes are exactly what the name says! Does your local animal shelter needextra funding to fix up its basement due to flooding? Do you want to contribute to a scholarship for someone who passed away in your town? This project is meant for Key Clubbers to help out within their communities doing different projects that benefit their community.

4.  Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation
This Foundation is mostly funded through donations from Kiwanis Clubs--let’s help out as well, Key Club! It is a scary possibility to consider for the New York State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the summer months. Lyme disease may affect the brain in many ways. This Project was set up to help pay for medical treatment for treatment for children with this growing disease since treatment is so expensive and many insurance companies do NOT pay for it.

5.  St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
Located in Memphis,Tennessee, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a leading pediatric cancer center that provides care to children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases, working to find cures through research and treatment.

6.  Doctors Without Borders

Doctors without Borders operates in nearly 60 countries and aids those people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care or natural disasters.

 7.   The American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is at work in communities all across the country providing programs aimed at reducing the risk of cancer, detecting cancer as soon as possible, ensuring proper treatment, and empowering people facing cancer to cope and maintain the highest possible quality of life. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp

8.   Make-A-Wish Foundation

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has given hope, strength and joy to children with life threatening medical conditions. This Organization grants a child’s one dying wish every 40minutes, in the US. http://www.wish.org/

9.   Down Syndrome Society

The mission of the National Down Syndrome Society is to be the national advocate for the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The National Down Syndrome Society envisions world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities.www.ndss.org

10.  The Fisher House

The Fisher House™ program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. www.fisherhouse.org

This year, our goal is to raise $175,000 for these charities and I know, that with the drive New York Key Clubbers have and with the support of this committee, we can reach, and even surpass our goal!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact your respective Lieutenant Governor, or, of course, me!

Yours in Service,
Lieutenant Governor Rhea Singh
District Projects Chair
